May 10th:

Amatos 6 VFW 5

A fifth grade fury of singles by Amato's Abby Young, Paige Carter, Taylor Whaley and Lauren Magnuson contributed to a razor thin victory over the VFW.  The Veterans of Foreign Wars sponsored squad countered with solid play from the following experienced players: Danielle Bergner(complete game with five strikeouts), Kristin Kane( a solid RBI single and key force out at third to kill an offensive bid by Amatos.), and Staci Swallow(tripled and scored  two runs, stole home, as well as being a steel wall behind the plate all morning). The aforementioned fifth grade foursome were helped by  Allysa Penny, Akadia Higgins and Sam Dibase(Amatos own steel wall) as they got in on the action with some timely hits too.  The Whaley/Dibase battery accounted for all 18  outs and  fourteen by strikeout, as well cutting down a few runners at the plate.

WEEK #4

May 12th:

Amatos outlasted the VFW in five innings
ten to nine in an exciting contest over at Wainwright field.  The girls in Red jumped on the VFW early with seven runs in inning two, paced by a grand slam by Taylor Whaley and several walks issued by VFW pitcher Staci Swallow.  The VFW came storming back back in the later innings on consecutive hits by Staci Swallow, Danielle Bergner,Hannah Skeffington, Courtney Verrill, Lydia Henderson, and Michelle Medici.  Emily Gray pitched all five  innings and collected the hard fought victory.  Both teams  played well in the field.  One memorable play was a dart thrown from Danielle Bergner(first base) to Hannah Skeffington(third base) to cut down Akadia Higgins going from second  at third in inning one.

 May 13th:

The Cubs of SPNLL emerged victorious over Amatos last night over at
Pine Street field six to five. The Cubs feasted on several  mistakes and walks by the visiting SPALL representatives to earn the win.  Amatos only surrendered one hit to the Cubs, but it would prove big.  A double in the right centerfieldd gap by Abby Onus in the bottom of the fifth combined with a throwing error was converted into the winning run for the home team.  Lexie Gervais, Elizabeth Small and Allysa Penny scored the go ahead runs for Amatos, but it was not enough to overcome the combination of walks, base path gaffs and  errors.  Abby Onus got the victory in relief striking out five. Taylor Whaley pitching all five innings, took the loss while striking out 12 Cubs.

May 22:

Dodgers 13 Amatos 6
The Dodgers from National took advantage of several Amatos mistakes for many unearned runs last night.  The powder blue visitors were also the beneficiaries of many free passes while looking at more than a few close pitches in inning five and getting the fortuitous nod to first.  Amatos out hit the Dodgers, but once again had too many self inflicted errors to compete.  The popular sandwich shop sponsored group jumped on the visitors first with four runs in inning one on solid hits by Taylor Whaley,Akadia Higgins and a bases clearing blast by Sam Dibase.
The Dodgers came up empty until inning three when they were given five unearned runs without one hit figuring into the scoring.   The Dodgers added a few more in the later innings, While Amatos struggled getting runs across and leaving several runners stranded.  The result was a
13 to 6 victory for the Dodgers.  Elizabeth Small had a multi hit game for Amatos.  Olivia Indorf, the most feared hitter in both leagues, drilled a grand slam  deep into centerfield in inning six to put the game out of reach for the Dodgers.  Olivia also collected the win, pitching all six innings while Emily Gray took the loss in relief.

WEEK #6

May 27th:

Braves 7   Amatos 4

The Braves from SPNLL over took Amatos last night on the National side of town to emerge with a 7 to 4 victory.  Erin Bogdanovich got her second victory over Amatos this season going all six innings once again.  However, it was not as easy this time.  She was greeted rudely in inning one when Taylor Whaley lashed a single to right and continued to move around the bases on passed balls.  She scored sliding under a Bogdanovich tag at the plate after a pass ball.  After Elizabeth Small got hit by a pitch and Sam Dibase walked in the third, Whaley sent a Bogdanovich offering sizzling into right field to plate both Amatos runners.  The Braves collected a couple of unearned runs in inning two after a couple of walks, hit batters and passed balls/wild pitches, but no hits.  Alyssa Penney added Amatos fourth and final run in inning four after Lauren Magnuson moved her to third(She was walked in from there) with an excellent at bat(fouling off several pitches before reaching on an infield hit).

The Braves took control from there.  After failing to score in  inning four, the home team scored five decisive runs in the bottom of the fifth, taking advantage of a few costly mistakes by the Amatos infield and some timely hitting as well.  The hi- lite being a worm burner of a triple by the aforementioned lightning lefty Erin B to the gap in left center, sending Bridget Campbell around the merry go-round for the 7th run.  The game was superbly officiated by SPNLL- softball VP, Paul Indorf, despite taking several foul balls off the chest and mask. Taylor Whaley pitched the first  three innings, before departing, striking out seven and Emily Gray pitched the last two innings striking out one. Bogdanovich struck out 11 Amato's hitters, while pitching all six frames.  Another huge Amatos hi-lite was Sam Dibase making two incredible plays on ground balls at short and throwing out two Braves at first.

Amatos 17  VFW 14

Amatos and the VFW locked horns in long contest on Saturday that ended with a football like score.   Both team's pitchers struggled keeping the carousel from turning and runs scoring in innings one and two, before settling down.  The fourth inning found Amatos continuing their assault with five runs , while the VFW scored only two.  VFW ace Danielle Bergner had to leave the game in the fourth due to a collision with the talented Amatos catcher,Sam Dibase at home plate.   Amatos put on an impressive hitting display.  Emily Gray , Sam Dibase, Taylor Whaley, Akadia Higgins, Lauren Magnuson, Abby Young, Elizabeth  Small, and Miranda Gleason all collected important hits for the girls in red.  The VFW countered with timely hits from Danielle Bergner, Michelle Medici, and an impressive double down the left field line by lefty Lydia Henderson after being hit in in inning one by an inside fastball.

WEEK #8

June 9th:

Amatos 7 Dodgers 3

The Amatos' sponsored group from SPALL visited the Dodgers from SPNLL last evening and claimed a decisive
7 to 3 victory.  The Amatos bunch seized control from the get go with three runs in the top of the first , paced by hits from Alyssa Penney, Emily Gray, Sam Dibase and Lauren Magnuson.  Amatos added runs in innings three, four and six to push the total to seven.  The Dodgers did cut down Abby Young at the plate on a nice play from Jenacee Bradbury to Olivia Indorf that was close, to help stop the bleeding. The Dodgers of SPNLL have been a major force in major softball losing just two games to this point in three years !  Emma Dennison collected two hits , a pair of flares over the infielders' heads and Olivia Indorf picked up an infield hit as well.  That would be all the positive sound of aluminum the Dodger faithful would hear on this night.  The battery of Taylor Whaley and catcher Emily Gray combined for 14 strikeouts and a runner thrown out at the plate on a doubleplay with a tag and one forced to end the game.  The two other outs made in the field came in the area to the right of second base.  The biggest out being a back up play by rookie Miranda Gleason throwing to Sam Dibase so as to force Olivia Indorf  going to second that put the brakes on a possible big inning for the home team.  Amatos climbed back into first place with this stunning victory.

June 10th:

Braves beat VFW

Cubs 13    Amatos 12

The Cubs from SPNLL came across town and shocked their SPALL opponents by scoring six runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a hard fought victory at the VFW field.  Amatos was in control most of the game  after relieving the Cubs of defensive duties in inning two two due to the five run rule.  Amatos continued to add runs in the next inning and in the fifth to get to 12.  Many girls had hits, but the big highlite was an Emily Savage blast to the gap in right center to plate Abby Young, Akadia Higgins, and Elizabeth Small.
The effort was not enough as the Cubs started inning six with a impressive drive to right center field by cubs star player Abby Onus for an easy dinger.  As a matter of fact Onus and her younger sister Sydney teamed up to stage and secure the comeback.  "Oh No" it's Onus!  Abby took over in relief of chased pitcher Holly Black(Black also figured in to the comeback with a couple of nice hits) and pitched splendidly , changing speeds and getting big outs.  Younger Sis Syd, saved big sister with a spear of a Miranda Gleason stinger in the bottom of the sixth and then doubled off Paige Carter on second.  Carter had tomahawked her way on off a high Onus offering and got to second on a wild throw.  This was the second heartbreaking one run loss to the Cubs suffered by Amatos this season.

June 12th:

Amatos 13  bobcats 6

Amatos of the SPNLL clinched the regular season championship by defeating the Bobcats of SPNLL last night over at the VFW field.
The game was relatively close at 7 to 6 until the home half of inning 5.  Paige Carter smashed a homerun to left center to empty the bases and score herself.  In doing so, she blew the game wide open.  The 7 run lead was more than enough for Amatos pitcher Taylor Whaley.  Whaley and catcher Emily Gray combined for 15 strike outs.  Lauren Magnuson set the tone early with a triple to
left, followed by hits from  Abby Young, Emily Gray, Emily Savage, Sam Dibase, Elizabeth Small, Whaley, Paige Carter, Akadia Higgins, Allsa Penney(Who also displayed some nifty base running),and toss in a couple free passes issued to Lexie Gervais and Miranda Gleason and the merry go round was spinning.  Amatos will play the winner of the Villacci Auto/VFW contest on Thursday for the whole enchilada or the SPALL Major Softball Championship. Sam Munson, Clara Ellis, and  Cassandra Huff played well for the Bobcats when they clawed their way back into the contest.

Amatos Claims 2008 SPALL Major Softball Title

Amatos defeated the VFW Thursday evening to claim the South American Major Softball Little League championship in front of a spirited crowd at the VFW field.  Amatos played a well rounded game with solid pitching, hitting, base running and defense.  The VFW battled as well but in the end it was Amatos emerging victorious.
The game capped the the end to a terrific fun filled season for all.  The league welcomed cross town play with our friends from South Portland National, which provided a wonderful variety of competition for the players.  The league also instituted a redraft of every player so as to gain balance throughout the league. Many games were close and competitive and the weather was terrific this year for softball with very little rainouts.  A special thanks to all our volunteers who helped make this a memorable year for the players.  The league cannot operate without you.  Many of our players will now be looking forward to the All-Star District tournament. Good luck to all our All-Stars!
