South Portland American All-Stars make it back-to-back state titles

BIDDEFORD -- Why win one state championship when you can double your pleasure.

That was the South Portland All-Stars way of thinking last week as they went 4-0 to repeat as Little League Softball 11- and 12-year-old state champs. SPALL beat Auburn for the state title last Thursday (July 22) in Biddeford, 10-0, in four innings.

South Portland American now advances to the Eastern Regional Tournament in Albany, N.Y., July 31-Aug. 7. Last year it took fourth place at the regional.

In the championship, SPALL rode the one-hit pitching of ace Taylor Whaley, who also whiffed eight and did not walk a batter.

South Portland American scored four runs in the second, five in the third and added the 10 run in the fourth. In the second, Lydia Henderson had a big two-out run-scoring single that put her team up 1-0. Whaley (2 for 4, run, 4 RBIs) followed with a two-run triple to right, and she scored on Laurine German’s base hit to make it 4-0. It was more than enough for SPALL.

During its five-run third, Whaley belted a two-run double and German (2 for 3, 2 RBIs) added a run-scoring single. Paige Carter (2 for 3, 2 runs) scored the final run in the fourth after she singled and eventually scored on a wild pitch.

Whaley’s only spot of trouble came in the first inning when Auburn (2-2) placed runners on third and second with one out following an error and its only hit, a well-placed bunt single. However, Whaley buckled down and struck out the Nos. 4 and 5 batters to escape the jam. Auburn’s only other baserunner reached in the third on an error.

SPALL beat Auburn in the winner’s bracket final on July 19, 5-1. Whaley, who is 7-0 in tournament play, tossed a no-hitter, striking out seven and walking three.

South Portland American scored all the runs it would need when it plated three in the first inning. Whaley (2 for 4) and German each singled to get things going and Kiley Kennedy followed with a two-run double to left. Kennedy scored the third run when she came in from third on Carter’s ground out to first base.

Kennedy (1 for 1, 3 RBIs, 2 runs), who had a hand in all five runs, scored German in the third with the team’s fourth run. German (2 for 4) singled and then eventually scored on Kennedy’s sacrifice fly. Kennedy scored the final run when she walked in the fifth, was bunted to second by Carter. Seeing third base was vacant, she took the base and scored on the subsequent overthrow.

Auburn scored its only run in the second on an error and three walks.

In earlier action, SPALL beat Machias on July 17, 11-1, in five innings as Michelle Moreau threw a no-hitter. Moreau whiffed seven and walked five, and also helped her cause at the plate with two hits. German was the big bat with a pair of two-run home runs. Whaley was 3 for 4 with three runs, while Kennedy and Abby Young added two hits each, and Carter was 1 for 1 with a run. Henderson, Lexie Gervais and Lauren Despins each had one hit apiece.

In its opening tournament game on July 16, SPALL beat Hermon, 6-2, as Whaley picked up the win with seven Ks and one walk. She allowed five hits.

The game was 1-1 through three innings. South Portland American took the lead for good in the fourth when Carter singled, but was forced out at second by Henderson’s fielder’s choice grounder. Kennedy then brought Henderson in with a double and the 2-1 lead.

Whaley’s two-run triple in the fifth made it 4-1 and the team added two more runs in the fifth as Whaley and Miranda Gleason drove in one run each. Whaley went 3 for 4 with three RBIs, while Gleason was 2 for 2 with an RBI. German, Carter, Kennedy, Young, and Despins each had one hit.

SPALL is 8-0 in tournament play, including 4-0 in the districts, and during the state tournament outscored the opposition, 32-4 (75-5 overall). Miranda Duffy and Allie Souza are also on the team, which is coached by manager Matt Whaley and coach Stuart Young.

South Portland American will open regional pool play on Saturday at 2 p.m. against Massachusetts. On Sunday it plays New Hampshire at 11 a.m., takes on Vermont Tuesday (Aug. 3) at 11 a.m., and winds up pool play Wednesday (Aug. 4) against Rhode Island at 10:30 a.m.

The top two teams from the New England pool will play Aug. 6 at 5:30 p.m., with the winner to meet the Pool A winner (Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware, New York, New Jersey) for the regional championship on Aug. 7 at 12:30 p.m. The regional champion advances to the Little League World Series, Aug. 12-18, in Portland, Ore.
